Which is the best value streaming service, Netflix, Prime video or Disney+?

Updated: Oct 8, 2020

We recently considered that we were spending far to much money on tv. Which is a real shame as we love tv. At the time we had SKY as well as the 3 main streaming services, Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+. We were spending well over £100 on tv services a month. Something had to go. At £50-£65 a month it was obvious that SKY was the service that had to be given up. Getting rid of SKY made a real difference financially and might make a real difference to you too.

Here's our tips on the big 3 streaming services in case you are thinking of making the jump too.

*All the below are based on the prices and content of the UK versions.

The big daddy on the block.

What can you watch it on?

Most smart tv's, games consoles, Firesticks, Chromecast, Apple tv and even some Blu ray players. This is by far the most widely available service of the 3.

Can you download and watch on the go?

Yep. Download and watch on the device of your choice.

Contract or no contract?

No contract. Cancel at any time

How many devices can you watch on and how much does it cost?

This depends on the package. The basic £5.99 will get you 1 screen, £8.99 will get you 2 screens and HD, while the £11.99 package will get you 4 screens and ultra HD.

Our 3 favourite shows or movies?

Netflix has the absolute widest range of originals and popular shows and movies of all 3 services. But here's our personal favourites.

Stranger Things- excellent sci fi/fantasy show that's scary and exciting in equal measures.

Cobra Kai- this amazing nostalgic throw back lets us back into the life of The Karate kid. What are he and the other characters up to and did everything go down how we actually thought?

Dark- Wow now this show is intense. A mix of time travel and family drama the least said about the plot the better, but if you think the last Nolan film was nuts you aint seen nothing yet.

The one with lots and lots going on

What can you watch it on?

Just like Netflix is available on most smart tv's, games consoles, Firesticks, Chromecast, Apple tv and even some Blu ray players.

Can you download and watch on the go?

Absolutely. You can download pretty much anything from the library.

Contract or no contract?

Absolutely not. Cancel any time

How many devices can you watch on and how much does it cost?

2 options here. £7.99 a month or £79 annually. Obviously the yearly option is better value, but it depends on how flush you are feeling. Now 4k is standard as long as its a device that can produce ultra HD. Currently this is the only service that is offering a free trial.

Our 3 favourite shows or movies?

The originals aren't quite as impressive as Netflix but there are some great choices if you look hard enough. Here's our personal picks.

The Marvellous Mrs Maisel-This gorgeous period comedy is about a New York housewife who discovers that she is a brilliant stand up comic at a time when women were to be seen and not heard.

Parks and recreations

A brilliant show from the makers of The Office. Also witness the sight of a larger Pre-Marvel Chris Pratt.

The Expanse

The best Sci-Fi on tv bar none. Challenging but also incredibly entertaining.

*Of course its important to note that you don't only get Tv and movies with Prime. You also get free next day delivery on thousands of products.

The new boy on the block

What can you watch it on?

Surprisingly its not available on all smart TV's. Hopefully this will change soon but make sure you check first before you sign up. Other than that its available in almost as many ways as the services above.

Can you download and watch on the go?

Of course!

Contract or no contract?

No contract at all cancel at any time.

How many devices can you watch on and how much does it cost?

£5.99 a month or £59.99 a month. This is the cheapest of the big 3, however it does have far less content choice than the others. What I mean by that is that its all family related films and shows. 4k comes as standard.

Our 3 favourite shows or movies?

This service has the biggest franchises in the world at hand. Star Wars, Marvel and Disney Pixar.

Here's our 3 favourite's

The Mandalorian- This stunning award winning Star Wars tv show is the absolute best D+ has to offer. Nostalgic and modern at the same time. Unmissable stuff.

The Simpsons-Yes that's right The Simpsons is on Disney+ now. Yes the later seasons aren't great but the early seasons are pure gold.

Encore- This great show reunites casts of American high school musicals for a new musical they have to prepare for in only a few days. Its wonderful to see people get together after years of not seeing each other and there's also some great musical performances of your favourite family musicals.

Now our family has all 3 of these, but we have still more than halved the amount of money we pay out for tv every month. The convenience of cancelling whenever you want is amazing. All 3 services have great original shows and movies to rival the likes of SKY. The choice is yours.
