Trust no one.
This has to be one of the best horror remake of all time. The 1956original really is a classic but this remake really ups the anxiety and paranoia. Unbelievably it received so-so reviews on its original release but is now considered a classic.
Strange plants are springing up in a San Francisco which catch the attention of a scientist played by Brooke Adams. No big deal until she takes one home and the next morning awakens to her husband acting very strange, as if he's not himself.....
From here, her, and a group of great character actors including Jeff Goldblum and Veronica Cartwright, slowly learn of the horror of what's truly happening. These new plants are actually creatures from another planet who make perfect physical copies of people, but who are devoid of human emotion. The secret to the success of this movie is the pure paranoia on display. Made during the height of great conspiracy thrillers like The Parallax View, it really has a sense of not being able to trust anyone. That's what really got to me the first time I watched this movie. The thought of someone you know acting completely alien, but no one believing you, and that perhaps that person is in on it too, is truly terrifying. Well and that human faced dog that licks its lips. Stuff of nightmares.
Available with MGM on Amazon Prime channels or if your really old school, DVD or blu ray here.
Movie Rating 9/10
Almost perfect if just a tad too long.
