Classic Review Dawn Of The Dead (1978)

Leon Woodley

When there's no more room in hell.....

Ah yes. Another movie I shouldn't have been watching as a kid discovered on late night tv when I was supposed to be asleep. Good times. This classic Romero horror is a sequel to the amazing Night of the living dead (kinda). When I first watched this I had not seen the original yet, but that was fine, as Dawn pretty much stands alone as a classic zombie movie. Think of Dawn as a larger scale, different point of view of the zombie apocalypse than Night of the Living Dead. The world is only just starting to fall apart at this point, with there being lots of chaos surrounding what's actually going on. I love the sense chaos in the early scenes in the tv studio. They really add a sense of utter chaos and confusion, with people just coming up with random ideas as to what's happening in the streets. Two of our heroes, a producer and a her reporter boyfriend steal a news helicopter and eventually team up with two AWOL swat members. During their search for fuel and food they come across a shopping mall and here's where most of the movie takes place. And this is of course where the real satire kicks in. The zombies flock back to the mall as if remembering a past life, the joke here being that the foible's of capitalism turns us us into real life zombies. Even if the satire is not your thing you will love the gory horror on display here. Tom Savini keeps the gore levels super high and it should satisfy even the most gore hungry horror fans. For me this movie is the perfect mix of satire and horror, the sort of movie Romero used to excel at. There is lots of social commentary going on here, but my favorite though coming out of this movie was, 'is humanity even worth saving'?

Arguably the best zombie movie ever made and defiantly one of the best horror movies ever made, if you haven't seen this yet what are you waiting for?

Movie Rating: 10/10

A true masterpiece of horror and satire that every true horror fan needs to see.
